Rescue Division

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department’s (JFRD’s) Rescue Division is one of Florida’s largest and most dynamic emergency medical service operations.

Our highly trained Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) respond to thousands of calls each year, delivering compassionate, skilled care when it matters most.

Every member of the Rescue Division shares a commitment to JFRD’s core mission: to protect lives, property, and the environment of our great city. Whether responding to a single patient or a city-wide crisis, our team is proud to stand ready, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

All fire or medical emergency calls in Duval County begin with JFRD’s Fire and Rescue Communication Center (FRCC). From here, skilled dispatchers coordinate and dispatch the appropriate units to ensure timely and effective assistance.

In January 2017, every JFRD Fire Engine, Squad, Ladder Truck, and Marine Vessel was outfitted with advanced life support capabilities to better serve our community’s medical needs. In addition to these capabilities, at least one paramedic is assigned to each unit 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. FRCC will send the closest fire apparatus and rescue unit for every emergency medical service call.

Recognizing the unique demands of critical trauma and medical emergencies, JFRD has four Critical Care Rescue Units strategically positioned across the city. The Critical Care Units provide hospital-level care in the field, ensuring patients receive lifesaving interventions en route to definitive treatment. These units are staffed with Critical Care Paramedics who are knowledgeable and skilled in advanced clinical patient care procedures and techniques.

Furthering JFRD’s commitment to emergency medicine innovation, JFRD, in partnership with UF Health, launched northeast Florida’s first Mobile Stroke Treatment Unit (MSTU). The MSTU is based at Station 64 on the Northside, featuring onboard CT scanning, tele-neurology capabilities, and stroke-specific treatment. This specialized unit brings critical diagnostics and early interventions directly to stroke patients, saving precious minutes and improving outcomes. The MSTU specialized team consists of two JFRD Critical Care Paramedics, one UF Health Neuro Nurse, and one UF Health CT technologist directly at the patient’s side. The Critical Care Rescue Unit and the Mobile Stroke Treatment Unit represent a new standard in pre-hospital care, improving outcomes in the most urgent cases.

The Rescue Division is also home to several specialized teams. These include the S.W.A.T Medic Tactical Operations Team, which works in conjunction with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office S.W.A.T Team. Tactical Medical Team members are certified Reserve Police Officers trained for inner perimeter and entry cell operations.

Another is the Bicycle Emergency Response Team (BERT). The BERT provides emergency medical services at special events throughout Jacksonville in venues and areas unreachable by a conventional fire/rescue apparatus.

Finally, the Division is home to the  JFRD Honor Guard. The JFRD Honor Guard proudly serves at JFRD Recruit graduation ceremonies and funerals of active and retired fallen firefighters.

The Rescue Division’s fleet contains 65 apparatus equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment and advanced life support capabilities. These units are staffed by more than 400 uniformed professionals committed to rapid response, patient care, and community safety, serving a response area of over 918 square miles. These resources provided world-class, cutting-edge pre-hospital care to the residents and visitors of the city of Jacksonville.
