JFRD Apprentice Program

Photo of Apprentice candidates in Mayor's Office Conference Room.The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department, in partnership with the Mayor's Office, has launched the Fire Apprentice Program. Participants in this program will become part of JFRD's family and will be afforded the opportunity to earn the minimum, state-mandated requirements to apply for the position of EMT/Firefighter within JFRD.

Apprentices receive 100 percent tuition assistance and will follow a highly structured path of instruction and training. All courses occur at Florida State College at Jacksonville’s Fire Academy of the South, 2700 Firefighter Memorial Drive (off of Alden Road).

In addition to formal EMT/Firefighter instruction, the Apprentice Program instills leadership principles and the value of community service in its participants. 

 To be considered, you must first apply and meet these requirements:

  • Must be 17-21 years old.

  • Must be a High School Graduate or Equivalent or a High School Senior.

If selected, candidates must pass a:

  • Background Screening
  • Drug Test
  • Pre-Physical Agility Test

The selection process will require further review of, but is not limited to, the following:

  • GPA
  • Oral Interview performance
  • Written and Practical Assessments
  • Driving Record
