Fire Explorer Program

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department is home to Explorer Post 29, chartered in 1992.

JFRD's Explorer Program is designed for young adults,14 to 20, male or female, who are interested in learning about a career in the fire service. The program is a joint venture with Learning for Life (an affiliate of the Boy Scouts of America).

In addition to learning about firefighting, the Explorer Program provides young adults with a sense of responsibility to their community through ongoing volunteer activities such as staffing public safety fairs, assisting with demonstrations at educational events and serving at various other JFRD events.

JFRD Explorers meet on the first and third Tuesday of each month at JFRD's Training Academy, 2700 Firefighter Memorial Drive, which is off of Alden Road on Jacksonville's Southside.

Each candidate is required to complete a 90-day probationary period.  Upon successful completion of the probationary period, the candidate becomes a member of Explorer Post 29, is issued a uniform, and may be qualified to ride along on selected JFRD apparatus on actual emergency calls.
